Killmayer generally composes at the piano, even though he is particularly sensitive to the special tone production of every instrument. But especially in his pieces for the piano there is evidence of a way of composing based on characteristics of the instrument, in particular a typical material resistance.
The point of departure for Rihm’s compositions is therefore a kind of primary expressive vocabulary that functions as the suggestive bearer of musical emotion.
