The Chopi are one of Mozambique's smaller ethnic populations. Their music for large xylophone ensembles, however, can be considered one of the most spectacular and complex forms of artistic expression on the African continent. Venancio Mbande is one of the last authentic representatives of this tradition. His compositions follow in the long history of mgodo, the ceremonial music for the elders and council members, the so-called chiefs of the Chopi.
