The santir is a trapezoidal dulcimer played with very light wooden hammers; it is the source of the European dulcimer. Unlike in Europe, however, where the dulcimer and the zither were used only in popular music, in Persia the santir became the instrument of the highly virtuosic classical art music that developed from the sixteenth century on. It is a tradition of very intimate chamber music that was passed on from generation to generation. Behnam Manhedji, who was born in Teheran in 1954 but has lived and taught in Germany for some time, is considered one of the leading masters of the instrument today.
