Since the 1950s Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) had been one of the leading theorists and composers of new music. Since 1970 he had devoted himself to composition using formulas, an extension of serial technique. In recent decades he had dedicated himself almost exclusively to his opera cycle in seven parts, "LICHT". Karlheinz Stockhausen died on 5 December 2007 in his home in Kürten.
