Krieger, Ulrich
Born in Freiburg, Ulrich Krieger has made a name for himself both as a saxophonist in the contemporary composed and freely improvised music scene and as a composer of electronic music and chamber music. Over the years he has developed his own approach to playing saxophone that he calls “acoustic electronics.” A highly differentiated approach to subtle noiselike sounds, multiphonics, and just and microtonal tunings are all central to it. The special microphone techniques he has developed for the saxophone, including controlled feedback, also play a significant role. He has worked with, among others, Lou Reed, La Monte Young, Phill Niblock, Elliott Sharp, Hans-Joachim Hespos, Merzbow, zeitkratzer, and the Berlin Philharmonic as saxophonist and/or composer. Krieger has received numerous prizes and scholarships, including composition scholarships from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, the Villa Aurora, the Akademie der Künste Berlin, the DAAD, and the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik. He lived in New York for an extended period and has been composer-in-residence in Los Angeles, Rome, Venice, and Bologna. Concerts have taken him through western and eastern Europe, North America, and Asia. Various CDs document his diverse activities. Since 1983 Ulrich Krieger lives and works in Berlin.
