Berger, Julius
Julius Berger (born 1954) studied in Munich under Walter Reichardt and Fritz Kiskalt, at the Mozarteum Salzburg under Antonio Janigro (and his assistant from 1979 to 1982), at the University of Cincinnati under Zara Nelsova, and in a master class with Mstislav Rostropovich. At twenty-eight Julius Berger was offered a position at the Musikhochschule Würzburg, making him one of the youngest professors in Germany at the time. First in Würzburg, later in Saarbrücken and Mainz, and since 2000 in Augsburg he has been supporting the finest among the up-and-coming generation in his field. Since 1992 he has also head a class at the international summer academy at the Mozarteum Salzburg. Julius Berger devotes a significant part of his international concert and recording activity to the rediscovery of the complete works of Luigi Boccherini, the performance and CD edition of the works for violoncello and piano of Paul Hindemith, and to the works of Ernst Bloch, Max Bruch, Richard Strauss, Robert Schumann, and Edward Elgar. Julius Berger has also distinguished himself through his intense commitment to the works of John Cage and Sofia Gubaidulina. Tours and concerts have led to musical partnerships and friendships with figures such as Leonard Bernstein, Eugen Jochum, Gidon Kremer, Siegfried Mauser, Norman Shetler, and Pierre Laurent Aimard, among others. He is president of the Leopold Mozart international violin competition and the international instrumental competition of Markneukirchen. Julius Berger has been active on juries in Salzburg (Mozart), Kronberg (Casals), Munich, and Warsaw. Further information at www.juliusberger.de
