The pianist Philipp Vandré (b. 1963) studied with Leonard Hokanson, Raymund Havenith, Sergiu Celibidache, and Rolf Riehm. He has a long-standing, amicable collaboration with Hans Otte, studying “Das Buch der Klänge” directly with the composer and becoming the first pianist other than Otte to perform it, which he did many times. In 1999 his analysis of this piano cycle was published by the Pfau-Verlag in Saarbrücken. Vandré has performed in nearly all of Europe’s musical centers. He is just as intensely dedicated to the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as to the Classical and Romantic repertoire. Composers such as Peter Eötvös, Hans Otte, Steve Reich, and Klaus Hinrich Stahmer and ensembles such as the Ensemble Modern and the ensemble recherche, and hr-Brass, and orchestras such as the RSO Frankfurt, the orchestra of the Nationaltheater Mannheim, and the Bochumer Symphoniker have all worked with Vandré. His CD productions appear on Mode Records, New York, and Kreuzberg Records, Berlin. Philipp Vandré has developed concepts for pedagogical concerts with the dancer Tamara McCall. He is one of the initiators of the a musical festival for children and young people in Stuttgart and was in charge of its organization until 2006. Vandré teaches music appreciation and theory at the Stuttgarter Musikschule. There he founded a composition class for children and young people in 1998. Since 2004 he has been working with Claudia Zocher of the Universität Gießen to build the network www.kompositionspaedagogik.de. Vandré is coeditor of the new edition of Morton Feldman’s works for piano.
