Hermann, Roland
The baritone Roland Hermann received his musical education in Germany, Italy, and the United States. His vocal instructors were Paul Lohmann and Margarete von Winterfeld. In 1968 Ferdinand Leitner brought him to the Opernhaus Zürich, and he remained part of its ensemble until 1999. Hermann enjoys an international reputation as a concert and opera singer and has performed in the United States, South America, Japan, Australia, and Europe. His opera repertoire is wide-ranging, including more than seventy parts, not only the famous roles of the classical repertoire but character parts in less well-known Romantic and modern operas. Roland Hermann has also made his reputation as a performer of contemporary music, and premièred a variety of works by contemporary composers such as Fortner, Halffter, Höller, Kagel, Kelterborn, Krenek, Kurtág, and Zender. The works of Schönberg, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Orff, and Bernd Alois Zimmermann are particularly important to him. Sixty recordings (including Henze’s "Fünf Neapolitanische Lieder") and some 150 radio productions (including Henze’s "Der Prinz von Homburg" and "Der Landarzt") document his comprehensive interest in opera, concert, and lieder singing. Since 1989 Roland Hermann has taught a vocal course at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.
