Ensemble Courage
The ensemble courage, based in Dresden, is Saxony’s leading ensemble for contemporary music. Founded in 1997 by Benjamin Schweitzer, the group has performed frequently in concerts featuring works by new as well as more renowned composers; ensemble courage has premiered more than 50 works and presented the German first performances of more than 30 others. Titus Engel has been musical director since 2000; in 2009 he also became the ensemble’s artistic director. courage enjoys a continuing cooperation with the European Center for the Arts in Hellerau. The ensemble has performed in numerous German concert series and festivals in cities such as Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, and Weimar. International tours have taken the group to Usbekistan, Slovenia, Finland, and Italy. Many of the group’s performances have been recorded and broadcast by various German radio networks (e. g., Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk MDR, Südwestrundfunk SWR, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg RBB, Deutschlandfunk DLF). The ensemble was awarded sponsoring grants from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2001 and the city of Dresden in 2004. Since 2010, ensemble courage has received institutional support from the city of Dresden.
