Stahmer, Klaus Hinrich
Klaus Hinrich Stahmer was born in Stettin (now Szczecin) in 1941 and studied cello, composition, and musicology at Dartington College of Arts (England), the Musikhochschule Hamburg, and at the universities of Hamburg and Kiel. From 1969 to 2004 he taught at the Musikhochschule Würzburg, where he founded the Tage der Neuen Musik festival and directed it from 1975 to 2000. In his work for musical associations (e.g., as president of the German section of the International Society for Contemporary Music from 1982 to 1987 and from 2000 to 2002 as well as many years working for the Deutscher Musikrat), Stahmer supported international cultural exchange and international understanding. Extended periods of study and residence in countries such as South Africa, the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and Japan as well as teaching commitments in Israel, the former Soviet Union, and in the United States led to influences from non-European music in his composition, giving his works, which were often marked by humanitarian ideas and pacifism, an unmistakable diction. This led to the founding of the Dresden-based Global Ear project. Most of his works, including a great deal of electronic music, have been released on CD.
